Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative: Research Series

Updated: Dec 15, 2020

***The deadline for submissions has been extended to Saturday 26th September 11:59pm EST.***

OGIP is a feminist collective that aims to advance, shape and influence the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and Youth Peace and Security (YPS) agenda to be more inclusive, intersectional and decolonized through advancing young voices and experiences. We aim to create a platform for multi-disciplinary research in a variety of mediums to diversify the WPS/YPS field and make way for younger voices bringing relevant contributions from across all spheres of WPS/YPS to the conversation.

The first OGIP research series will re-launch in September 2020, following a break for the Youth Voices of Covid Blog Series. This will be a series of work on the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI) and its associated themes. This is an exciting opportunity to have work published as part of the launch of a new and innovative platform and to influence and shape what OGIP research looks like.

Research Series One: Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative

In the context of the passing of the newest WPS Resolution, 2467 (2019) on conflict related sexual violence, and the approaching 20th anniversary of the WPS agenda, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office have renewed their focus on PSVI. The second international conference on PSVI was supposed to be held by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on the 5th anniversary of PSVI. This would have been a moment to focus attention on the themes of prevention, stigma and accountability for conflict-related sexual violence.

This research series is a chance for our community to critically engage on the issues around this topic that matter to them and drive the conversation open. We hope that the series will contain publications of varying style, from academic analysis, policy reviews and op-ed pieces to artwork, podcasts and vlogs. Contributions from researchers, practitioners, activists, academics and community organisers are all welcomed, as are submissions from teams or organisations.

We aim to publish contributors with geographical, methodological, theoretical and stylistic diversity and as a youth collective we will be prioritising the voices of youth.(1) The working language of OGIP is English (British and American) as this is one of the most widely spoken languages across different regions of the world. However, we strongly encourage contributors to also produce their research in other languages. Submission and drafting will be in English and the contributor will then be asked to translate into an additional language if they are able and wish to do so.(2)

The process of contributing research

The first step is to submit a summary and additional information on this online form so OGIP can get an idea of the type of work you would like to produce. Please make sure that your work is anchored in and/or linked to PSVI and the themes under its umbrella. You can find further details about PSVI here.

The deadline for submissions is Saturday 26th September 11:59pm EST.

You will then hear from a member of the OGIP team on the outcome of your submission. Following this you will work with the OGIP editorial team to set a timeline for the submission of your contribution. OGIP will always be flexible to find a timeline for submission and editing that suits you. Once you have submitted the first draft of your work you will then receive comments from the editorial team within 1-2 weeks and will have an additional 2 weeks (approx) to address them and resubmit your next draft. There will be time for final edits and a deadline will be set for the submission of your finalised work. Once finalised your work will then be published on the OGIP webpage as part of the research series on PSVI. You will be informed of the estimated date for the publication of your research once the final submission is received by OGIP.

If you have any questions about the process please do get in touch with the team on OGIPResearch@gmail.com

The deadline for submissions is Saturday 19th September 11:59pm EST.

(1) OGIP is working with the definition of youth as under the age of 35, however, extending that binary definition based on contextual realities and national youth policy directives to acknowledge the flexibility of the concept.

(2) We acknowledge that this puts the burden of the labour of translation on the contributors, however, limited access to funding at this time precludes OGIP’s ability to cover expenses for translation. This is noted as a key priority for when funding becomes available.
